Hospital EDI Pure Water Equipment Maintenance: A Critical Lesson to Avoid Costly Failures

Summary: In the medical and pharmaceutical industry, pure water quality is directly tied to medical safety, treatment outcomes, and compliance with international regulations. As the core equipment for producing ultrapure water, EDI (Electrodeionization) pure water systems have become an indispensable component of modern hospitals—undertaking vital tasks such as medical equipment cleaning, surgical instrument sterilization, pharmaceutical preparation, dialysis water treatment, and laboratory research. A recent maintenance case at Qianhai Hospital perfectly illustrates the heavy costs of overlooking key maintenance details: the hospital’s EDI system failed suddenly, disrupting partial daily operations and incurring unexpected repair expenses, and the root cause is a common oversight that plagues many medical institutions and enterprises.

When our team arrived at Qianhai Hospital for maintenance, we quickly identified the core issue: severe rust inside the EDI system’s concentrated water pipelines. This rust not only reduced water flow efficiency, leading to unstable ultrapure water output, but also caused the iron ion content in the produced water to exceed the standard—completely failing to meet the strict medical water quality requirements for dialysis and drug preparation. What surprised the hospital’s maintenance team was that the equipment adopted food-grade stainless steel pipelines, which are widely recognized for their "corrosion resistance" and "hygiene." This raises a critical question: why did pollution still occur in these high-quality pipelines, and what can other hospitals learn from Qianhai Hospital’s experience?
Through in-depth inspection and analysis of Qianhai Hospital’s EDI equipment, we summarized three primary causes of pipeline rust in EDI systems—key points often overlooked in daily operation and maintenance, with the second being the direct culprit of the hospital’s failure:
First, the pipeline lacked inert gas protection during the welding process. Typically, high-purity argon (99.99% purity) is used as a protective gas to prevent oxidation and rust on the pipeline’s inner wall during welding. Omitting this step turns the weld joint into a vulnerable spot for corrosion. While this was not the main cause of Qianhai Hospital’s issue, it is a common hidden danger that all medical institutions should guard against when installing EDI equipment.
Second, the weld seams were not subjected to pickling and passivation treatment—and this is the root cause of the rust issue in Qianhai Hospital’s EDI equipment. After carefully examining the pipeline welds, we found no traces of pickling or passivation: pickling is designed to remove oxides from the metal surface, while passivation forms a dense oxide film on the stainless steel surface, effectively isolating the pipeline from corrosive media such as water and chloride ions to fundamentally prevent rust. For EDI pure water equipment like Qianhai Hospital’s, which demands extremely high water quality for critical medical procedures, pickling and passivation are not optional; they are essential steps to ensure system stability and water quality compliance.
Third, the water passing through the pipeline has inherent corrosiveness. If the concentrated water in the EDI system contains high levels of chloride ions, it will significantly accelerate pipeline rust—an effect that is particularly pronounced for unpassivated pipelines, whose corrosion rate is several times higher than that of passivated ones. In Qianhai Hospital’s case, the concentrated water’s chloride ion content was within the normal range, which further confirmed that the lack of pickling and passivation was the sole root cause of the rust.
Qianhai Hospital’s case also highlights a key misunderstanding: many institutions believe that food-grade stainless steel pipelines are "maintenance-free" and "pollution-proof, but in reality, unpassivated food-grade stainless steel pipelines are themselves potential pollution sources. As we saw in the hospital’s equipment, even in short-term use (the EDI system had been in operation for only 18 months), iron ions released from the unpassivated pipeline surface directly compromised ultrapure water purity, making it unfit for medical scenarios such as pharmaceutical preparation and hemodialysis. As industry professionals know, medical ultrapure water requires extremely low ion content—usually a resistivity of ≥15MΩ·cm—and even a small amount of iron ion pollution can affect the accuracy of medical tests, the safety of drug use, and even patient treatment outcomes.
For hospitals like Qianhai, the necessity of EDI pure water equipment is undeniable—it serves as both a guarantee for compliant operations and a key safeguard for patient safety. From endoscopic instrument cleaning to injectable reagent preparation, and from biochemical analyzer operation to hemodialysis treatment, every critical link relies on a stable, high-quality ultrapure water supply. When Qianhai Hospital’s EDI system failed due to pipeline rust, the hospital’s dialysis department had to temporarily reduce the number of treatments, and the pharmacy suspended the preparation of some injectable reagents—resulting in not only financial losses but also potential impacts on patient care. This case clearly shows that neglecting EDI equipment maintenance can lead to losses that are difficult to quantify.
Drawing on Qianhai Hospital’s maintenance experience, we urge all medical institutions and related enterprises: the safe and stable operation of EDI pure water equipment cannot rely solely on high-quality equipment and pipelines. Scientific installation and regular maintenance are equally important. Just as Qianhai Hospital learned, after EDI system installation, professional technicians must inspect every detail—especially weld quality and the effectiveness of pickling and passivation. In daily use, regular inspections and maintenance should be conducted to promptly detect and resolve potential issues such as pipeline corrosion, avoiding costly failures caused by negligence.
As demonstrated by Qianhai Hospital’s case, pickling and passivation treatment— as a key link in EDI equipment installation and maintenance— not only extends pipeline service life but also ensures long-term ultrapure water quality stability. It is an effective measure to reduce maintenance costs and mitigate operational risks. In the medical industry—where safety and compliance are paramount—overlooking this step, as Qianhai Hospital initially did, is equivalent to leaving a "time bomb" for normal hospital operations.
After our team completed the pickling and passivation treatment of the pipelines and replaced the severely rusted parts, Qianhai Hospital’s EDI system resumed normal operation, and the ultrapure water quality fully met medical standards. Moving forward, we will continue to provide professional maintenance and technical support for EDI pure water systems in the medical, pharmaceutical, electronic, and other industries, helping customers avoid unnecessary losses through professional services and technical guidance. We also encourage all medical institutions to learn from Qianhai Hospital’s lesson, attach great importance to EDI equipment maintenance, take every installation and operational detail seriously, and ensure the EDI system operates at its optimal state—providing a solid foundation for medical safety and compliant development.
