Solving High Water Hardness Issues for Hechi Power Plants to Ensure Safe Operation of Boilers and Steam Turbines

Summary: In industrial production, excessive water hardness and elevated calcium and magnesium ions may seem trivial, yet they pose critical hidden risks. This is especially true for industries such as power and chemical processing that rely heavily on core equipment including boilers and steam turbines. Scale accumulation caused by hard water not only reduces production efficiency and increases operation and maintenance costs but also severely endangers equipment safety, potentially leading to unplanned shutdowns and severe equipment damage. Recently, we customized a 10T/h industrial water softening system for a power industry client in Hechi. This solution completely resolved their core challenges of high groundwater hardness and frequent scale formation, delivering comprehensive protection for stable and secure production operations.

Different industries maintain distinct standards for industrial water quality, with the power sector imposing particularly stringent requirements. The hardness of cooling water in power plants must be strictly controlled at ≤3.0 mmol/L, while boiler water follows even more rigorous hardness indicators. The primary goal is to eliminate safety hazards caused by scale deposition. The Hechi power plant relies on groundwater as its primary water source. Naturally high in calcium and magnesium ions, this raw water is classified as typical hard water. Long-term usage leads to heavy scale buildup on boiler heating surfaces and inside steam turbines. On one hand, scale hinders heat transfer, lowering heat exchange efficiency and drastically increasing fuel consumption. On the other hand, it triggers under-deposit corrosion, resulting in equipment deformation, pipeline blockages, and even pipe rupture risks. Given the critical importance of continuous and safe power production, equipment failures caused by poor water quality would result in incalculable shutdown losses and high repair expenses.

After fully understanding the client’s core requirements — eliminating scale, securing equipment operation, and ensuring 24-hour uninterrupted water supply — our team conducted in-depth communications. We comprehensively evaluated their production capacity, hourly water consumption, and precisely tested key water quality parameters such as calcium and magnesium ion concentrations in local groundwater. Ultimately, we delivered a tailored 10T/h industrial water softening system. This embodies our core advantage of customized services: we never recommend generic equipment blindly, but design solutions precisely matched to on-site operational conditions. The customized system fully meets daily production demands and satisfies strict boiler water standards, realizing multi-functional application. It improves equipment utilization, cuts additional procurement costs, and achieves on-demand customization with high efficiency.

The customized 10T/h industrial water softening system features targeted design and personalized configuration, perfectly addressing the client’s high groundwater hardness issue. Operating on the principle of ion exchange, high-efficiency resin adsorbs and replaces hardness-causing calcium and magnesium ions, reducing water hardness at the source and completely preventing scale formation.

To meet the power plant’s non-stop production demands, the system is equipped with a dual-valve dual-tank structure and two salt tanks, supported by 70 packs of resin and 20 packs of water softener salt. The key advantage of this configuration is uninterrupted water supply: when one tank reaches adsorption saturation and enters the regeneration process, the other tank operates continuously without interruption. Through alternating operation and regeneration, stable softened water output is guaranteed, overcoming the common limitation of traditional single-tank systems that halt water supply during regeneration. This design fully aligns with the continuous operation needs of power production and serves as a key competitive edge over standard universal equipment.Since commissioning, the plant’s water quality problems have been fully resolved, and scale deposition inside boilers and steam turbines has been completely eliminated.

Equipment heat exchange efficiency has been significantly improved, cutting fuel consumption and daily maintenance expenses. Most importantly, all scale-related safety risks are fundamentally eliminated, and overall production line stability is greatly enhanced. This cooperation not only solved the client’s practical production challenges but also demonstrated our strong customized service capabilities. From water quality testing and solution design to equipment configuration and on-site adaptation, we provide one-on-one tailored services for diverse industries and water quality conditions, ensuring equipment perfectly matches production needs and maximizes operational performance.

High water hardness is a common challenge faced by manufacturing facilities across industries, including power, chemical, metallurgy, food processing, textile, and pharmaceutical sectors. Hard water negatively impacts production equipment and product quality in varying degrees. Accelerated equipment wear, reduced productivity, and rising safety risks trap enterprises in a cycle of frequent maintenance, high costs, and limited output. A properly matched industrial water softening system is the ideal solution. It reduces calcium and magnesium ion levels from the source, mitigates scale damage, extends equipment service life, and lowers operational costs, supporting safe, stable, and cost-effective industrial production.
